I am looking to upgrade from my existing DT 770 Pro 32ohm. I mainly listen to pop, alternate rock, pop-rock and hip hop.
Currently considering AKG K712 Pro and Beyerdynamic DT T70P. Budget is $300-400.
PS:I also own a pair of JVC FX-850.

What sources exactly do you plug your headphones into?

I own the Beyerdynamic T70 250-Ohm headphones.
Out of the 25 headphones I have bought in the past 4 years, they are my preferred headphone :)

Cellphone and laptop directly.

No amp or dac? I would suggest spending some money in that direction first as it will improve your current headphones sound.

I would suggest Hifiman he-400i but might be a bit hard to push with your phone unless it has built in DAP. Laptop might push them but still would consider grabbing at least an entry level dac/amp. http://www.amazon.com/Micca-OriGen-High-Resolution-Preamplifier/dp/B00V7K5UJI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457125593&sr=8-1&keywords=micca+origen $100

The 62-Ohm AKG K712 Pro would be a little more power hungry then a 250-Ohm DT770 headphone.
So you would need to spend some cash for a decent headphone amplifier, if you got the K712 Pro.

Is headphone w/o amp bad?

Also, I need headphones with huge pads for my relatively big ears. DT 770 Pro barely fit.

I thought K712 Pro was around 60 ohms

If your headphones are power hungry or have high impedance you need an amp to really get any decent sound from them. Your current headphones are fine for mobile and laptop use since they are 32ohms. However a dac/amp will really make a huge difference in sound qaulity, separation, detail, and clarity vs built in sound from laptop.

The Ohm rating is just one factor in determinating how much power is need to drive a diaphragm.
Sensitivity is another factor, the less sensitive, the more power is needed.
and the AKG's 700 series are not considered sensitive.

True my he-400i's are consider use able for most things but to really get any kinda energy from my music they need an amp. Or my LGv10 phone with built in DAP I just bought runs them well this phone is like black magic! Loving it for my music listening needs

Any good DAC around $50? Suggest a headphone to go with it too. :p
