Far be it for me to say what others should do but for me, the HD800S would only be a sure thing if I didn't already own the HD800's. Notice the apostrophe. When Sennheiser releases the HD900 or HD1000, let's talk.
Unit then, at least for my part, there's other things to spend money on. I don't own a pair of planarmagnetics yet. I'd rather go for an LCD-3 fazor or maybe even go balls-to-the-walls bonkers and get the LCD-4 an incur the wrath of my better half just to see how angry she can get. "You spend four thousand dollars on WHAT!?" That's a fun conversation to have.

Take this into consideration. Get the HD800S and keep the wife.
Get the Abyss AD-1266, HE1000, LCD3 Fazor or LCD4 and your wife's divorce attorney gets all your dollars after you sell all your sound gear.
 
Get the Stax SR-009 and a Headamp BHSE, give your wife a listen, and you will have to shell out for another Stax SR-009 and Headamp BHSE.
 
Then you can also enjoy the pleasures of tube rolling as you progress from the standard JJ's to Psvanes, Shuguang Treasures and on to Winged C SED's XF4. XF2, Double Getters, Metal Base, etc.
