So I currently have the HD598, I want to upgrade. What would you guys say is the next step that has a considerable difference in both gaming and music experience to that of the HD598? AKG Q701? I'd like to keep my budget below 200.00. I currently use onboard sound as.

Unless you're getting something used (like a HiFiMan HE-400 or Sennheiser HD600), I don't think you're going to get much of an upgrade (from the HD598) with that budget. Also, those two models I listed would probably require the addition of a headphone amp (at the very least, the HD598 will play nicer with onboard sound than those models). For reference, a new HD598 is running around $150 on Amazon.

The Q701 might offer something different, but I don't have any experience with it.

EDIT: also, is there anything about the HD598 that you want changed? Anything you don't like? Any flavor difference you're looking for?

The akg k7xx may be a slight upgrade, but again probably more of a different sound signature. Pretty sure massdrop is selling them again.

Well actually I just want the best all around headphones, what if I up my budget to 300?

Philips Fidelio X2 is a great all-rounder. If you wan't one purely for gaming you should go Q701 with a Magni 2

I'd definitely recommend X2 here as its sound signature can somewhat complement with your HD598. The X2 also doesn't need an amp to sound good, but of course a good DAC/AMP is still a good DAC/AMP. You can get the X2 quite cheap, and the supply is not really scarce, people sell it on usual basis.
