Thanks for the great idea - what a line-up! Sadly, I don't see it on Qobuz ... they have a gap in Mr. Vitous' discography between 1970 and 1976.
[Atlantic: recorded November, 1969; released May, 1972.] The original bassist for Weather Report - fantastically joined for a monster outing!
For today - a progression thru the "shape shifting" days of Weather Report, with the main "shifter" being the bassist. First it's Miroslav Vitous, then Alphonso Johnson, and then Jaco Pastorius. With each change the music became funkier. There were many drummer and percussionist changes - too many to describe here. The other dynamic was a change to more electric instruments, especially the use of new synthesizers and other electronica that Joe Zawinul jumped on right away. The constants were Zawinul on keys and Wayne Shorter on reeds.
From 1971, 1973, 1975 and 1977.
At this point, still in free jazz land, spacing out on synths and a random
soprano sax note.
It does kinda sound like a Morning Lake.
They're progressing already ... this is nice.
The groove is coming along ... not yet very funky. Miroslav is still on bass here.
Miroslav and Joe disagreed on direction, so Mr. Vitous left and he was replaced
by Alphonso Johnson. The change more toward funk is immediately noticeable.
This song is just cool. Groovy, yeah.
So now we have Jaco Pastorius on bass and another mega-shift in the band's
sound. Really jazz-rock fusion now, and quite complex. Their best line-up, IMO.

The Dirt On My Diamonds album cover reminds me of the Quinton Tarantino's Death Proof album cover
