OK, so I'm just venturing into this head-fi universe......and now I'm wondering just how much better SACD or an equivalent format sounds!!! Now the question is whether I should get a player that's SACD, DVD audio, HDCD, or whatever. Does anyone know which format has the largest number of albums? Since regular record stores don't have em, I'm assuming they're not that easy to find. Where do you get your HD audio format cds?

http://www.sa-cd.net/ lists (all?) SACD titiles so you can browse it to see if it has what you want.

http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67082 is a list of HDCDs. HDCD isn't really that special of a format though

http://soundblaster.com/resources/re...id=53904&cat=1 This here lists some dvd audio titiles and claims there's 730ish dvd audio titles.

I cant really comment on the sound quality of sacd vs dvd audio

For the most titles, vinyl is the way to go.... but this really depends on if you consider vinyl to be a special format or not. Some people prefer it to CDs and SACDs, some people consider it to be absolutely crap and old worthless technology. This is probably best left to another thread though (and has been discussed many times before)

The SACD site has over 4000 SACDs and the dvd audio site claims there's around 730.. so there are obviously more SACDs than dvds

I'll think about vinyl, but taking care of records could be a pain. I'm digital to begin with, so in the short run, looks like maybe SACD is the most competitive digital fromat around....

thanks!

The Head-Fi HDCD link was started to identify unmarked HDCDs or ones that were not listed at Microsoft's HDCD website, therefore it was never intended to list the entire inventory of HDCD-encoded CDs. Of course, Microsoft has since taken down its HDCD website.
