Hi all,

Just planning for the future as I don't know how long the stock tubes will last for - given my usage patterns - which are typically 8-10 hours in  3-5 hour sessions. I don't know much about tube physics/electronics/science in general to be perfectly honest. I'm probably going to look into rolling the stock tubes or buying some extra as backup just in case they break/fail prematurely.

From what I can tell and comprehend from WA's official page:

Power tubes (the tall fat ones): I need 6080?
Driver tubes (the small, centre ones): I need 6922 / 7308?
Rectification tubes: EZ80

So would something like
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4-x-NOS-RCA-6AS7G-CV2523-6080-Audio-Amplifier-vintage-tubes-/251092617178?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item3a764947da#ht_500wt_1413
- work for power tubes?

Some people have suggested I get the Sylvania 7236 / Tung-Sol 7236
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NOS-MATCHED-PAIR-TUNG-SOL-7236-AUDIO-TUBES-UPDATED-5998-/330762841010?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item4d03006bb2#ht_574wt_1170

Usually, what tube upgrade really affects the output sound?

Thanks!

Those are the power tubes that work in that amp, but they are grossly overpriced.  You can find an RCA 6AS7G for about $15 or a GE 6AS7GA for about $9.  Prices on tubes is getting sick these days, but both of those tubes I mentioned are cheap and very good sounding.

You can get a pair of JAN Phillips 6922 for about $45, which are also very good tubes.  A pair of EZ80 rectifiers will cost $30 tops for a good set of RFT or Ei.  No need to pay more for some exotic label.

MacedonianHero originally owned and rolled my WA2 with Tung-Sol 5998 (Power), Telefunken EZ80 (Rectifier), Mullard CV2492 (Driver)

It is an excellent combo

It was certainly a killer combination. If I could make one final "tune-up" (though not cheap) would be to swap out the Mullard CV2492s with Siemens E88CCs. Have a quad of both here with my Liquid Fire and as great as the Mullards are, the Siemens just finish it off so very well.

The 6H13C tube is a nice tube because it's warm, low noise, and has good tonal balance.  However, it has a little veil to it.  I personally like it, but it's by no means the best tube out there.  I guess if you bought that lot and didn't like it, you could part it out and make up more money.  If you loved them, you're set for life.

The Tungsram EZ80 is probably one of the worst EZ80s.  You'll be much better off with an Ei, RFT, Brimer, or GE.  Also, stay away from EZ81s because the EZ80s almost always sound better.

The JAN Phillips 6922 is a nice tube, but the JAN Sylvania 6DJ8 is better.

Call me insane, but this seems like an extremely good deal - I can buy these and never have to worry about replacing tubes ever again...

What are your thoughts?

As for the other tubes, I think I can get a pair of Tungsram EZ80s for about $30 shipped, and JAN Phillips 6922 for $40 - both off eBay.

Before you posted this, I bought a pair of JAN Phillips 6922. Might grab a pair of the Sylvanias too just to compare/contrast.

Warm, low-noise and veil - sounds like a great combination for the Beyer T1!

The Tungsram ones are the worst? I'm using 2 x Tesla branded EZ80 tube at the moment that came stock with the WA2.

The Tesla is a nice tube and is better than the Tungsram. If you have the itch to upgrade, go for the ones I listed above.
