Woo Audio WA3 Impressions and Tube-Rolling

I have the Cetron, it’s supposed to be a clone of the Tung-Sol as they bought the manufacturing plant. I also have the Tung-Sol branded which is older. It’s hard for me to tell them apart, similar signature, they both have higher output and sound less tubey in terms of liquid lushness in comparison to the 6080 I run.

What is your go to 6080? I really like the TS 5998 but it's very difficult to find, wouldn't mind a back up. Should say I can find them but I'm not willing to pay their prices.

Well, I only have one 6080 and it is the Chatham WA version. I would be happy to swap for your 5998

The tubes came in. Happy to report the Tesla sounds nice and warm and pairs with the Russian SED power tube. The Sylvania 7236 sound good with the Voskhod rocket drivers. I'm sure it would work well with anything, it's a nice tube with the higher gain. Now to the Westinghouse, it ran hotter than heck and the left side was dead. This is the only tube that made my amp have some hum. I'm sure it's because it was a faulty tube. A replacement is suppose to be on it's way.

As of now I'm running the Tung Sol 5998 and the Voskhod drivers. Very nice combo
I finally picked up the Winged C, I borrowed a friends last weekend and it was quite nice. Lush and airy, been burning it in for a day or so.

How is the 5998 and Tesla combo?

Picked up a NOS Westinghouse 6080 made in Japan. Trying it out tonight, so far so good.

Thank you to @Odin412 for starting this thread. I just came across it. I also just purchased via EBay a mint WA3. It truly is a great h/p amplifier for high impedance headphones. I am rotating the WA3 with the BHC 1.1 for OTL duties. I am also using 12au7 (or 7316, 7730) tubes with a pair of 6922->12aXX adapters. The sound, to my ears, really opens up and has more “heft” and dimensionality compared to that when even Sylvania 7308s are used. The Tung Sol 5998 and Brimar CV4003 are great together in this amplifier. I wish that Woo Audio would re-introduce the WA3 so that others might experience the many positive qualities of the WA3.C59128DD-BF7D-4068-9F09-2DB337703A2B.jpeg

I was thinking the same thing just this morning. Such a nice amp to have been discontinued.

Welcome to the club! The WA3 is a great little amp that deserves to be un-discontinued (re-continued?) by Woo Audio. Sure, it's designed for high-impedance headphones so it won't work with most planar magnetic headphones, but it sure is magical with the HD 650 and the ZMF dynamic headphones!

To @Wid: I just finished reading this thread and am happy that you found TS 5998. Those are tough to find. At least the WA3 uses only one. My backups are: another TS5998, Mullard 6080s, GEC 6080s. The list will expand🤞.

Right now I switch between the 5998 and a Sylvania 7236. Both are fantastic tubes with only the slightest difference in performance. I have a couple more but these are my go to power tubes. Using the Tesla 6922 for driver tubes right now but the new gold lions are really nice too.
