Yamaha YH-5000SE — a flagship from an orthodynamic headphones veteran!

For me the HD800's isn't getting replaced as its still a dynamic, but if I can get that planar flavor with that HD800 soundstage. Verdy nice !

Susvara on 200 watt mono blocks... It's an experience unlike any other.

The low weight of this headphone is simply outstanding, might even knock out Meze as the comfort top tier? They also like Meze seems to be pretty easy to drive? I truly value comfort and easy drive-ability, that's why I'm a huge fan of Meze. :)

Earpads looks kinda small tho! Are the connectors standard 3.5 mm? Or some kind of proprietary jacks?

The SE-version is way out of my price range, but I might be interested in the non-SE version, especially if there's a good deal as a B-stock or as lightly used set on the market.

The connectors on the headphone-side are 3.5mm mono. From the photo, the bottom part of the plug may have some chase to fix it.

I collected the impedance and sensitivity of flagship headphones. Lower sensitivity (higher zone in the chart) means you need more power, and higher impedance means (right area) you need more voltage, thus making it more difficult to drive in some aspects.

power1.png

And this is the power [mW] necessary to gain 100dB.
Formula: Power [mW, 100dB] = 10^((100-Sensitivity)/10).

Say, HD800s has very high impedance [300ohm], but thanks to their high sensitivity[102dB], we do not need much power [0.63mW] to drive.
On the other hand, DCA's new Expanse has a very low impedance [23ohm], but because of its very low sensitivity [86.5dB], it needs much more power [22.39mW] than Sennheiser's.

We can say YH-5000SE needs more power than Mezes but not demanding like Hifiman or Audeze.

power2.png

Power is a product of Voltage and current. Voltage vs. power is like this.

power3.png

Generally, if a pair of headphones demands more power, driving them is more challenging. However, in more detail, ATH-ADX5000 demands a higher ability to supply voltage to an amp than Th909 though they need a similar level of power, for example.

Moreover, I focused only on the volume (SPL, sound pressure level). But the demanded performance of an amp or "drive-ability" is determined by many aspects, not only by how easy to get loud sound.

Conclusion: YH-5000SE will not demand so much power from the amplifier, but probably slightly more demanding than Meze's flagships.

I wonder if there will be a way to listen to it locally :p
It's definitely an interesting headphone.

Potable Audio Festival 2022, hosted by e-earphone, will be held this weekend in Akihabara. Yamaha already announced the participants can listen to YH-5000SE at the event. It is necessary to receive a numbered ticket to be distributed 11 am and 2:30 pm. Again, I cannot go to Tokyo this time, but I expect they will tweet their impressions and will introduce them here again.

Hope one of the big stores will have one to demo when I visit Japan in Jan.

A good news. 50 minutes ago Fujiya-avic in Nakano, Tokyo announced they obtained a YH-5000SE for demo at their shop. They say it is brand-new so not burned-in yet. I suppose in january it will be in good condition. Fujiya-avic has a lot more high-end headphones and DAC/amp. So it will be possible to compare with others hand-by-hand with high-class (expensive) pairing, such as Nimbus.

The two-days festival was over. Some more information from the participantes and other sources here.

- Regular auditon is available at Akihabara shop of e-earphone from tomorrow (Dec. 19).

- Production capacity is quite limited. That's why demonstration at shops was not available till today.

- The first lot was sold out within 30-40 mins after pre-order began at 0:00 Dec 9 in e-earphone and Fujiya-avic websites. No information on date of 2nd lot or overseas availablity so far.

- The earcup and hunger are made from magnesium. The slider is made from plastic.

- BriseAudio is starting to produce cables for YH-5000SE with the proprietary connectors. <the plug of the connector is normal 3.5mm mono, but it has a special plastic part at the base to attach the cable to headphones firmly.>

Tomorrow I will collect and post impression of them. This time I found two people who tweeted negative impression. Their points are maybe more interesting than preferable reviews.

Would you be so kind to post those impressions here in the thread?

Of course, I would.
I collected impressions from Japanese tweets in Portable Audio Festival held on 17-18 Dec hosted by e-earphone.
Grouped them into three categories: e-earphon's staff, those who see it negatively, and preferable comments.
All comments are summarized instead of translated words-by-words. (Detailed nuance of Japanese tweet is almost impossible to translate!) Inside < > is my comment or supplement.
Links to the tweets were inserted for the post of the staff and when photos are important.

1. e-earphone's staff

<Three of the PR staff of the shop posted short impressions. As they are regular members of the shop's youtube channel and have posted a large number of audio gear reviews, I expect the in-depth review will be available on the channel near future.>

@eear_kawachan
Incredible real sound
Beauty and elegance
Fine resolution in highs, though, relaxed in general
Excellent design, Very light, and top comfort

@eear_tanimiku
The sound of the instruments is vivid and realistic.
I would like to listen calmly for a long time.

@eear_hamachan
Lighter than expected
Wide sound stage and realistic sound.
They are more like speakers than headphones.
Good experience
I love it!
<in the second photo attached to the tweet, he grabs the headband, and the leather part is bent. I guess its softness is well-tuned to improve comfort in addition to the lightweight>

<addition: another staff tweeted after my original post>
@eear_erina
More compact than expected
Slightly hard sound, with a firm pressure level in the mids and highs
A lot of information on the atmosphere surrounding instruments
The piano is very beautiful as expected for the Yamaha brand
Regular customers of our shop will definitely like it

2. Negative impressions
<Only two users were found. (except for complaints to the cable termination.) >

@yonks630
Disappointed
Mids and highs are not clear enough
Not the YAMAHA sound which I imagined
The Reproductivity of small sounds is a good point
Too expensive for the performance

@opanntu
It was not what I expected
Not natural with lambskin earpads. Mids are too strong
It is like the sound of small speakers plus a super woofer
Resonance quickly disappears. Maybe "correct" as acoustics theory but not rich for headphones at this price.
A bit of natural balance with suede pads
Audition is necessary before ordering.
The venue was too noisy to judge all.
Its strength might be found through repeated auditions
I think the conclusion must come after listening in my home.

3. Favorable comments

@tapt_
Punchy sounds near ears
Less three-dimensionality than HD800s or Liric
Beautiful sound
Ultralight

@Japanakayama
Light fitting
Natural and real sound, listen forever
Good resolution and gradation
Deep earpads, and diaphragms are near my ears

@sho_ai_kumaneko
Listen forever
Zero harshnesses
All sounds are audible
Real positioning
Spacial, astounding depth <direction of z-axis>
It can be the lifetime headphones

@zipang67
No complaints about the sound
Zero insulation
Be enveloped in sound
Fiio Q3 can drive it with a 70% volume

@shio_chan_man
Incredible presence and rawness

@dymomaster
<in the photo, you can see a Yamaha engineer, Mr. Hadano, who told technical aspects in the youtube video>
Inside the earcups are almost empty but full of music
Two seconds are enough <to know its performance>
Better use time to talk with the engineer

@m-sora
I prefer YH-5000SE to D8000.
For extended listening, YH-5000SE is much better (including weight)

@hideo_stax_06es
Wide range
High resolution
Vergy good headphones

@MazQmusic
<@MazQmusic is a DTMer. The review is from his/her blog linked to the tweet>
The frequency response is not flat. A small peak in 300-700Hz, dip in somewhere between 2-4kHz
More bass than DT1990Pro
Time domain and positioning are the best in my experience
Swift response
No distortion in the bass
Very cool kick drum
Precise stereo imaging of kick drum and electric bass
Dry tone, better for wind instruments than strings
Highs are clear, never harsh

@shinomi0489
Fit and comfort are top tiers
The venue <of the festival> is not suitable for an audition
I hope to listen again in a calm and silent environment.

@furafura_walker
Great headphones
Good quality and quantity of lows, beautiful vocals, and clear highs.
Fine resonance
Atack may be a little depressed, but this is a tuning for holistic beauty.
Vocals emerge with suede earpads.

@kazuma_memories
Shocked in ten minutes
Greatest sound of instruments in my experience
Too much fun

END

Thanks for yet another highly valuable post & translation!

Interesting, I have to say. A lot of different thoughts & opinions.

I'm excited about the vocals and the mids. It's hard to conclude from the impressions whether they are forward or recessed, but I most certainly love a mid-forward sound signature :wink:

One thing we can conclude from the positive listening impressions is that YAMAHA nailed the tuning...

not so surprising, ey 😉?

I like this photo of @eear_tanimiku. It is the best photo ever to see the material, build, and finish.
Tuning forks' logo on the center is so cool as well.
