ZMF Caldera - New Planar Magnetic from ZMF!

Is anyone able to identify these cups and grill exactly? I believe the wood is KOA?

The headband has a 'DEMO' stamp on it (which the seller never told me about), so I believe it was a B stock purchase originally.

Thanks!

The cups look like camphor burl but I'm not 100%.

Do the thick pads make the Caldera less mid-centric? Is there echo in the mid when you increase the distance to your ears?
A little less mid-centric: slightly more distant vocals due to the slightly bigger perceived stage. Small bass elevation and smoother treble. Tamed upper-mid/lower treble intensity. Hint more warmth. No echo.

I shall try it, stock pad sounds slightly imbalanced to me. Too much midrange.
I'm a broken record on this subject. I thought more highly of the stock pads that you appear to--but the Caldera (which I purchased with the Mantle mesh installed) really elevated into something special when I put the lambskin thick pads on it. I agree with everything @betula said about the sound with these pads.

When listening to music on headphones, we typically don't hear it as a succession of checklisted characteristics (ie, tone, soundstage, dynamics, bass/mids/treble)--we hear the gestalt of it, the overall impact of the sound. I found this is where the lambskin thicks changed the Caldera's sound in a remarkable & positive way. As I put it in my review of this headphone,

"The thicks change the whole vibe of this headphone. Especially on music with strong bass and drum parts the sound is spacious and atmospheric, as if the listener is sitting in a corner booth of a dark, smoky club. It's a chill, meditative, hypnotic sound."

I could have taken that further and said the Caldera with lambskin thick pads made the recording/performance space (the air around instruments & notes) more present and tangible. I "hear the room" more clearly w/the thicks. This benefits large- & small-scale classical, choral music, acoustic jazz & unamplified acoustic music in various genres. FWIW, these are qualities I usually associate w/dynamic drivers, not planars. Perhaps the thick pads facilitate even more of the ADS' excellent soundstage/spatial qualities....? Whatever it is, it works for me.

Those pads are never coming off!

+1 for thick pads. I am not treble averse, and typically do not go for the warmer/darker option, but the Caldera thicks just have a certain magic about them that is hard to deny.

I’ve had a few weeks with the thick lambs on. I like them better than the thin cowhides. The thins sound like I’m a little too close to the transducer - everything is a little too in my face with those. I lasted about a week wearing those before switching the thicks, which I hadn’t heard before. That was two weeks ago. I’ve enjoyed the thicks, though I don’t think it’s a huge, transformative change from stock. Appreciable improvement for sure, but not transformative.

Memory may be doing me a disservice though. now that I'm acclimatized to the thicks, I’ll go back to the stock pads tonight just for fun. I’ll see how I feel after.
