Grace Design x Massdrop m9XX DAC/Amp Review: First Impressions

How does m9xx fare against Gung/LC combo? Is the general sound signature same?

Btw, good luck with ur sale

The LC is a slighter warmer amp than the m9xx, and quite a bit more powerful.  The main reason I switched was because I own an Omni (Blackwood) and was looking to squeeze out that bit of performance by providing >1.5W of power.  The m9xx did a fantastic job of powering it, but the bass tightens up even more with better directional cues from greater power.

The Gungnir came afterwards since I found it inefficient to keep the m9xx for just its dac component.  It turned out to be the greatest improvement I've noticed.  Clarity, soundstage, directional panning, and separation just got a large amount of refinement.  I was initially on the fence about spending so much on a desktop setup, but it was well worth it and makes me extremely curious about multibit.

Thanks for the well wishes!

Thanks.
I might get both m9xx and LC and keep both. Based on what i read, m9xx is neutral, so it will be good with dark sounding cans like Mad Dog.

Pm sent

If anyone's interested in purchasing the M9XX, please PM me.  I've got a "like new" condition unit that I'm looking to sell as I've upgraded recently to the Liquid Carbon/Gungnir.  Fantastic amp, but the upgrade bug hit :frowning2:  Sadly, I work in an office that works more collaboratively, so headphones larger than IEMs or earbuds are kind of frowned upon.

It's a very good match with the HD800S, and frankly I wouldn't go to anything more exotic/expensive unless you want to run a full balanced setup.

So in the standoff M9XX vs Chord Mojo, which device emerges the winner, if sq is the main decider?  I love my M9XX, but I hear a lot on these forums about the sq of the Mojo, and I have been wondering whether I should also go "Mojo" or not, although I already have more portable AMP/DACs than I reasonably need (eg. GO1000, GO V2+ incoming, and Emotiva Big Ego).  Unless the Mojo seriously outshines all of these, it will be too much of a shelling out of $$$ to make sense on my budget...

Any thoughts?

Is there a recommended burn in period for m9xx ?

On Liquid Carbon thread, there is lot of discussion on the burn in. But i couldn't find any mention of burn in on m9xx

I still think it is more to do with form-factor and features. The sound quality of both is pristine!

The reason for the burn in was to lower cost of manufacture.
All amplifiers from Cavalli are burned in at the factory. To lower cost, it was asked that the buyers do the burn in just for this one amplifier.

Thanks for the response. It is sort of what I have suspected all along, only placed in a little doubt by the many praises I hear regarding the mojo.

Bump. Trying to find out what short cables I should buy to use at work and also whether or not I need a Wyrd. Thanks guys in advance!

When I made a review of the JDS Labs The Element, I made reference to the Grace Design m9XX. From my "vintage" laptop, there are definite benefits to using a Wyrd or a REGEN, if such a thing is called for. I personally found no benefit to using these USB re-clocking and power cleanup devices on the m9XX. That is, I simply used the original cables provided with the m9XX.
