DIY Earbuds

I decided to look at the few PK shells I have and of course found a variant which has the notch at both top and bottom. This is the shell that shipped with the 120Ω Bery drivers. The diameter is a little bit bigger and an older style PK driver cover is slightly smaller and does not fit. The diameter of the cover for the 120Ω Bery driver is slightly bigger, so fit this shell perfectly, but is a little loose on other PK shells. Some extra confusion, I guess just be aware that PK shell size and features are not uniform. I believe this is talked about in this thread somewhere.

The covers for the drivers I bought don't fit the shell very well either. Luckily they are larger than the shell and not smaller, so it is a problem that can be fixed with glue.

Yeah, better comfort and vent system than PK's.
Also these day it's almost impossible to find OG PK shells (two vents and side wings on shell lip)
What I hate most about PK shells is the narrow cables hole

I don't have any cables that fit, so my build is on hold until one arrives.

All these variants on Ali are disaster,. These two notches on your shell are causing pressure leakage.
I find similar thing on some Nokia shells (they have even smaller notches on top and bottom) and because of it they sound very bad
One of solutions, you can glue a small piece of EVA foam or piece of rubber band on these notches

I was wondering about that, since those notches are so big. I guess gluing different colored rubber bands on might make for nice L/R indicators.

Good idea to glue small pieces of foam or rubber band into the notches, but not needed at this time. My 120 Bery build is sounding excellent, no leaking.

Exactly. I've seen the B40 on AE and the shell + speaker cover are slightly bigger than the normal PK shell.

I haven't done too many PK builds, just enough to know it's a mixed bag and you might need a little luck ordering shells and drivers with covers that fit correctly. Ah, you hit the cable snag... fortunately for me I had the Shozy BK before I wanted to try building my own and knew the cable would have to be thin.

For notches, you can improvise with anything.
DIY can be really interesting and frustrating but never forget to have fun :beerchug:

Haha, I should have just asked in the first place :p

Thanks for the list. I ordered these yesterday and I think they should be okay as they look similar in size to those you listed.

Never ever buy these:
- https://aliexpress.com/item/32781956208.html (they are sticky AF)
- https://aliexpress.com/item/32957590657.html (they are stretchy)

A bit better option

- https://aliexpress.com/item/1005005201726580.html (cut connectors and throw them in garbage)

Oh shoot. Those stretchy ones are on the way in the mail. They looked promising in the pics D:

Edit: it was already in my mailbox, lolol

I'm working from memory, but those 'tiger' cables look a whole lot like the cables that came with the Rikubuds Berzerker 1.

Good to be back again in diy buds, assembled the purple/pink dot its so good but prone to fatiguing for extremely long use, also the kgis p13 pro (silver cable) mid centric, remind me of 400 ohm bery with less treble. Waiting for my 4 pairs of 15.4mm pu composite 18 ohm from ali, dont hesitate with that driver, imagine a tame 130 ohm bery with warm touch while retain its technicality, will soon update that build later

Yeah, I've had so many mishaps modding PK shells before because of this, and it doesn't help that most of the DIY drivers are salvaged 14.8 drivers from vintage earbuds that don't fit correctly to these new PK shells. I also had to transplant the drivers to a new faceplate because of how brittle they've become.
Nice selection of drivers. If you're talking about the long stem Docomo shell, I agree. I've recabled some of those cut cable long stem Docomo buds from chitty's store and they sound very good without any further changes.

For me 14.8mm sound best in DOCOMO shells
I really like both PK and Docomo shells; they both fit me perfectly, but for me, Docomo shells synergize with 14.8 drivers better. Also do you guys know where I can get metal ones? Like theseIMG_20240227_150452.jpg
They look so awesome. XD
This is the list of my (old-school) favs:
DIY 14.8mm PK1 150Ω "Red Film"
DIY 14.8mm SR Pro 32Ω
DIY 14.8mm PK2 32Ω SL-45
DIY 14.8mm PK2 32Ω "Black"
Have you tried any of these drivers yet?

Cable looks great and I like how is braided, just don't starch the wire. Rubber wrap on these is very elastic

Tried the static electricity ii, its sound good, balanced, but for my taste it slightly lack impact & slam for the low and high, soundstage is good, definitely above average, but imo you need to put more effort than an average mx500 build, if you like pk build and comfort better get the panda, dqsm was it? I forgot the brand

Edit : upload my static electricity ii pk

These are OG PK's. They have side wings on the shell lips and 2 cuts on the back

I tried some of these Nokia drivers but for me is very hard to identify them all. Most of them are very good ... OFC in Docomo shells
This example is also beautiful

Speaking of faceplates that don't fit well on shells. How do you guys go about temporarily fixing them on so that you can listen while still in the tuning process?

I have been relying on the foam to keep it in place, but that could easily allow a gap to open in between the shell and faceplate, changing the sound.
