Shanling EC3 - Compact CD Player for your desk and small Hi-Fi rigs
Oct 23, 2022 at 6:03 PM Post #47 of 70
The more (and longer!) I stare at the photo of this beautiful CD player, the greater my desire to own one for its industrial look. Like other classic designs I find desirable, this CD Player makes me think of the silent film, "Metropolis".

I do not think there is enough "physical content" in it to justify a 4 digit price tag but then I am not an engineer. It is a CD player and those can be bought anywhere at an inexpensive price. I just bought and am using a single disc CD Player with optical output that cost me $80. It sits where the subject of this thread would if I had one.

I hope it runs no more than $300 as in speaking with my non-audio-enjoying spousal unit I am told I had best not spend more.
So hey...What is the MSRP of this beautimus device? I shall not be upset if I can not afford one but that attitude is nothing like the joy at reading $299.00 (or less!).

As Elvis would say were he alive and a member here, "Thankyew...Thankyewveruhmuch!"

I think this is up here already but I just went to Shanling's site and it says...

..."CD Players were the staple of Shanling’s production for the past 30 years, from affordable models to very high-end ones. Our new EC3 is the latest in our line of simpler budget offerings and it’s the ideal model to re-introduce the Shanling CD players to the international Hi-Fi market."

So I got that going for me...Which is nice.

Not sure I understand why this is a CD 'player' rather than a CD 'transport'. Surely most of us now have decent DACs or amps with decent built in DACs and are only looking for disc spinners to be transports. If this is going to be a 'budget' device, what sort of DAC is going to be in it? Could Shanling lower the price further by making a 'transport only' version?

EC3 was designed as multifunctional device for budget rigs, kind of in line with our older Tempo designs. Its aim is more at the old-school two-channel users, rather than the core members of Head-Fi. (And yes, such market still exists).

DAC info is listed on first page, ESS ES9219C.

One supposes that the price could be lower but many people see no real need for a stand alone DAC. If it has Coax and Optical outputs then it can still be the Transport you desire. In my case, I have a couple of DACs but can not hear any difference from the DAC in my players. The only DAC I personally use right now is the one built in to my Emotiva XDA-2, which to me looks really good.

I bought them to see if I could discern a difference but in my case, bits is bits and if ever I buy another DAC it will be one that reeeeeeally appeals to my sense of style! It had better look really cool, like the Shanling EC3 does or my current favourite CD Player the Marantz CD60 (in Silver/Gold!). Another consideration is that this player is small in size to use on a desktop setup, ergo the DAC is built in to save space but has the necessary digital outs to allow those with the room and the need for a separate DAC.

I do not blame you one bit for wanting to use a standalone DAC as that is your preference and you may well be able to discern a differece. All the best in your quest!

Pity about the ESS dac. Tempo Ec1b had a lovely PCM1976, did it not.

Still very tempting. It's just the right size. If it's cheap enough... I dunno. Otherwise I'm picking up a Yamaha for CD's.

Never underestimate people's need for nostalgia. Especially as we get older. 😊

Update: I Emailed Shanling to see if I could find out the retail price of the EC3 and was told that they have not set a price for it as of yet. The EC3 is supposed to be part of the company's affordable line of audio components. As such, I was thinking the EC3 would sell for under a $1000 US.

It seems that the Shanling EC3 is finally for sale. Price is around $650 U.S. plus $50 U.S. shipping. The link to
purchase the EC3 is at the Shanling Website listed below:

Warning, this is not an official Shanling seller, we have no idea who is this, where the units come from and if they provide any warranty or support.

And since we are here:

Shanling EC3 will be shipping to official international distributors around end of November, MSRP is 619 USD / Euro.

Glad that you saw this and commented on it before any buyers were misled! I found this Website earlier today, searching online to see if Shanling had decided on a retail price for the EC3, and was surprised to see a Website listing the EC3 for sale. I figured they might be a Shanling distributor, but was not sure. Thanks again for the warning!

Thank you, that is good to know about the seller. And the price. Alas I still can not afford one at this moment in time. It is very cool looking and sized right for my purposes. The other CD Player that I hanker for is the Marantz CD60. It's a LOT bigger than the EC3 and costs $999.00(why do the not just say $1,000?). ) I can not afford that one either.

But again, that does not mean they are not worth their asking price.. They both look superb!

Thank you again!

Hi - Skipped to the end to see if anyone has heard it yet; just saw it on audiophonics while looking for a remote control switchbox for (of all things) a new in box Sony Discman I got off goodwill this month. That was for a small-footprint bedroom player. But I've been looking for a smaller player to replace a living room NAD 546, one that will also fit in another small space. This (the Shanling) looks incredibly cool but pretty pricy. If anyone's heard it, would be interested in their opinion. Having trouble tracking down a remote control switchbox as well, unless you count alibaba.
