Old versions of M6 are not getting any upgrade to higher Android. Would have to buy M6 Ultra instead.

Updating my Shanling Pro 21 to the latest firmware through the wifi on the DAP itself is one of the worst experiences, it is extremely sluggish, only downloading 1% every 15 minutes, which to get to 100% will take up to 10 hours or more, please Shanling fix this, this isn't 1997, it's 2023 and it shouldn't be this slow and I have really fast Internet so I know it's not on my end, this is unacceptable for such an expensive player.

Never taken that long for me, and I have some pretty snotty wifi. 2.5 hours at the most, which is still a long time.

I learned a few firmwares back to just download it on the PC, transfer over via USB and do a local update. Doing it right now. I have the slowest internet on the planet and it would probably take at least 10+ hours, or more to do OTA. Via PC download maybe 40-50 minutes.

At first I wasn't too sure on how to download the latest firmware on a PC onto the DAP but after waiting for the horrible sluggish update through the DAP itself I was getting frustrated waiting so I followed Shanling instructions on how to copy the firmware on to the DAP through the PC and it took me about 10 minutes, I don't know why it was so slow through the player which would of taken 10 hours or more for it to complete.

Our firmware files for OTA are hosted on Chinese servers and the speed often depends on what country you are in. This is unfortunately something that the price of device doesn't really affect.

Yes, manual update is my personal recommendation, can be done most of time within 5 minutes.

Has anyone else with an M6 Pro 21 found that they cannot play FLAC files in the new Tidal 2.87.XX Android app?

To qualify that a bit: In the new 2.87 Tidal app, I cannot get any 24/96 FLAC to start play. This is with the streaming audio quality set to MAX in settings The play button is unresponsive and the quality button stays on Low. Nothing that is FLAC 24/96 plays.

Examples of 24/96 that won't play at all:

Bruce Springsteen Darkness on the Edge of Town
Eberhard Weber The Colours of Chloe
Brian Bromberg The Magic of Moonlight

If I set the audio quality to HIGH, they will play but you're limited to 16/44.1.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

A strange caveat to this is that certain albums that are FLAC 24/192 will play, but in my case stop and start with buffering (my internet is the issue here) but they do play.

ZZ Top Tres Hombres (not the 2006 expanded one, the regular one)
Doors L.A. Woman
Cream Disraeli Gears
The above 24/192 FLAC albums will play with the caveat as stated above.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Other interesting notes:

A user on the Hiby R5 Gen 2 (Android 8.1) thread notes the same issue--won't play FLAC with the new Tidal app and a user stated on Reddit that their Hiby RS6 (android 9), yes, I am assuming the one with the R2R ladder DAC, also does not play FLAC on the new Tidal 2.87.

Is it the Android level?, as my other phones/tablets with Android 11, 12 and 13 play the new Tidal 100%.

Is it because it's a DAP with a chip configured with MQA decoding as all of the reported non-playing DAPs have MQA 16X unfolding capability.
My phones and tablets with Android 11 and above do not have MQA decoder chips and they all play the new Tidal fine.

Is it something configured incompletely in the new Tidal's Android app player that is not taking into account the particulars of these players' implementation of the Tidal app?

Wondering if anyone with a higher Android level DAP (say, 10 or above) that has a 16X unfolding MQA-capable DAC can play the new Tidal app without issue?

I've since reverted back to V. 2.86 on my Pro 21 and my DAP plays normally, but hopefully this will be fixed in future Tidal app and/or firmware updates..

Hi, we are now investigating this issue, it seems there is some chaos on the side of Tidal with switch from MQA to Hi-Res and it's messing up with the previously enabled MQA devices. Some files that used to be MQA are now just 44.1/48kHz, some MQA are still MQA, it's a mess. So far it's affecting only our 430 CPU based devices, 665 CPU based players seem to work fine.

For your track Eberhard Weber The Colours of Chloe, I see three versions on Tidal, but I don't see any that would be MAX?

Hi @Shanling--thanks for your response, the CPU reason had occurred to me too, so thanks for the clarification.

I was talking about the album Colours of Chloe and I can see two versions of the it in Tidal-- one is High (in both the old Tidal app 2.86 and new 2.87, plus Windows desktop app) and the second one is either Master if you're in Tidal app V. 2.86 (like I reverted to in my M6 Pro 21), or Max if you are in Tidal 2.87 or the Windows desktop app. There may be regional differences -- I'm in Canada.

The Tidal Windows desktop app using one of my portable amp/DACs with MQA capability tells me that the Max version on Windows desktop is straight FLAC (there's no MQA indicator, just 24/96), whereas the Tidal android app on my old 2.86 Tidal Android version sees it as Master only. The High version is just seen by all platforms as High.

Yeah, pretty confusing.

Thanks again for responding and hopefully there will be a fix.

@Shanling: Re new Tidal Android app issue:

Joe Bloggs from Hiby has some interesting debugging data suggesting that there is a specific issue with hardware that is Android 10 and below not being able to play FLAC in the new Tidal app. Just thought I would pass it on to you for your team investigating the issue. It's post 5,090 on the Tidal Lossless Streaming thread.
