Ouch.
From what the review says, it's more or less a M11(recent version) with a stronger amp.

I guess what I'm really looking for is an all-in-one like the FiiO R9.
The R9 is quite different from a a DAP, isn’t it? Or were you hoping the M23 would cover the basic bases that the R9 has to allow the M23 to fill the need?

I was just exploring the realm of reasonably sized DAPs that could drive full sized headphones better. I've had the DX300MAX which was excellent but the form factor of the M17 and M23 drew me in.

I've been thinking to consolidate my desktop setup so I guess I should be looking into the "Desktop DAP" category or the "DAC/AMP all in one with an android display screen" category of devices.

There’s probably a thread for Roon  , but if all I do is stream music, or play downloaded music, from Tidal, Amazon, or Apple, does Roon offer any compelling advantages?

Nope, not really. Its main strength is managing your local library and high quality playback. Qobuz and Tidal are integrated. It does let you manage multiple zones and devices simultaneously (and even sync them). Recently, it has added "away from home" access as well (Roon ARC). There is lot to it and it's hard to describe briefly.

He also mentioned that the ZX507/707 are better which brings into question his gear.

It could be that his gear pairs better on warm/dark sounding daps.

Here is my video about M23

On the one hand, I'd like to see some new design. On the other hand, the sound is an improvement over the M11 Pro/Plus, as AK4499EX combined with THX gives a mature sound that combines technicality and musical representation. In short, it's a DAP not for monitoring representation but for music enjoyment.
If FiiO updates its DAPs to Android 12, it will be great, but I won't be disappointed even if they stay with their current firmware. For me, it is more than enough for a few years, especially considering new features like global EQ.
