    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

As someone who uses the K702 in the studio for mixing I think they get way more useable after the mod. Thing is, for studio work you must hear EVERYTHING, or as close to it as possible. I can't make decisions on stuff I can't hear, I was constantly messing up the low end of the mixes because of...

    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

They are basically the same headphone, only difference is 702 has a detachable cable an later models have an updated headband.

    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

Here is a close-up. I looks like a piece of circular tape with an additional layer of fabric in the middle. My guess is the only purpose of the fabric is to cover the central part of the tape so it won't become a dust magnet.

    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

It's an airtight tape. I think the most important thing aside from that is to find a tape that adheres strongly. Something like electrical tape would probably work but I'm afraid it would fall off after a while. Needs to be stronger. The original tape was really hard to pull off!

    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

AKG is owned by Samsung (South Korea) so you're not far off. It would be interesting to see some measurements of the discrepancies between your K701's.

    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

Ok, more measurements showing one simple additional mod that in my mind improves the bass mod to the point that they actually become *seriously* good. I'm doing mixing work in a studio and so far the Sennheiser HD600 have been my holy grail because they have such a natural representation...

    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

Ok, that is more in line with what my initial impression was. I have a vague recollection that there was an official statement back in the day that the bass was slightly elevated (by 3 dB or so) but I'm not sure where I read that. Anyway, maybe that Facebook comment was made by some sales person...

    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

Regarding the difference between K701/Q701, according to AKG themselves the only difference is cosmetic, as can be read in this Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/pg/AKG/photos/?tab=album&album_id=425309636620 Why do people believe there is a difference? Has anyone done measurements or...

    Reversible AKG K701 bass mod

I've been curious of the bass mod for a long time and finally today I took the plunge. I did some measurements too, see below. I have the K702 but they have taken the back seat since I got the Sennheiser HD 600. The Senn's really blew my mind when I got them. Recently I felt drawn to the AKG's...

    AKG K702

I have both the K702 and HD600 and in my opinion the latter are far superior. They have a full natural sound compared to the K702 that sound kind of thin with artificial detail. The K702 have, in my opinion, some problems (dips) in the upper mids and treble that mask certain frequencies and make...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

Glad to hear you found satisfactory earpads!   Just to clarify my experience with the Sound Professionals pads: I did not notice any change for the worse in terms of isolation. Even with stock pads low frequency rumble from traffic can not be blocked out, but since the stock M40x's have...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

I would recommend going open back for your second pair. Keep your M40x for the times you need isolation and a pair of open backs for when you're on your own and want a luxurious sound. You will be secretly praying for your room mate to leave so you can have a quality music moment... :) As...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

Does indeed sound very strange. You may look into BPPV disorder which leads vertigo and dizziness. It is usually triggered by certain head movements but perhaps it can be triggered by sound too. I had a friend who suffered from this a while back. Getting a bit OT here but it's certainly an...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

I haven't got nauseous from headphones ever but I can sometimes experience some weird tickling sensation in my throat (!) from some higher treble frequencies if they are exaggerated. I think the DT250 did boost the treble to some extent. Do you think it's the sound or physical comfort which is...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

I think the Sound Professionals pads are better than the DT250 pads in pretty much every way, if that was the question. But keep in mind that allthough I'm trying to describe the changes in sound as objectively as I can, your experience may be different.

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

I haven't tried any other pads. I felt I achieved what I wanted with the Sound Professional pads so I ended my search there. But you are right in that material plays a big part in how they sound. I understand the more they let air escape, the thinner they sound.

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

Regarding soundstage, I like it wide too but since they are closed cans there's a limit how much of that you can get without compromising sound quality too much (Brainwavz). With the SP pads it's as good as it can be in that respect. It's always hard to objectively explain how big a difference...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

I still stand by my recommendation of the Sound Professionals ear pads. Compared to the stock pads they reduce the mid bass hump and they tame the treble slightly. I felt that there was a treble spike that could sound a bit irritating in some songs but not anymore with the new pads. I tried the...

Why do people say m40x is more accurate than m50x?

Yeah, I know the measurements I posted are compensated curves, but RTINGS are the only ones AFAIK who have measured both. Now I didn't listen to any songs with lots of deep bass, and if I would have, I might feel differently about the m50x. But it was still rather clear that the m40x has...

Why do people say m40x is more accurate than m50x?

No one has compared the two? For a couple of years now I've been reading over and over again (on Head-Fi and other forums) how the m40x are the accurate/neutral ones and the m50x is the bass monster. My brief A/B test the other day seemed to show the opposite, backed up by some measurements I...

Why do people say m40x is more accurate than m50x?

I've been using the m40x for more than a year now and I do like them a lot. I mostly use them at work and when commuting but occasionally I use them for mixing and other studio work, alongside my DT880 & DT811 (and K702 a while back). I don't think they are super neutral/flat/accurate since they...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

I didn't use capitals to emphasize quantity. I was merely trying to point out roughly what category of sound signature (bassy/neutral/bright etc) the HD 439 belong to since it seemed the OP was under the impression they are rather neutral.

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

One word of caution regarding the Sonic Sense sound samples: they will not give a true representation of how the headphones will sound in the real world since they are coloured by whatever headphones/speakers you are listening through. They can only be used as a means to see how two sets of...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

Quote:   I'm not sure if you looked at the graph I posted earlier. The HD439 are BASS HEAVY and very far from what generally is considered "neutral". The M50x would probably be quite similar to them where as the M40x has LESS bass (but still north of neutral).   To give you an idea of...

Audio Technica ATH-M40x: The Little Brother that Could

WOW!!! Just got the Sound Professionals velvet earpads and I must say they are good! While I really like the M40x out of the box I always thought they were a little too bass-heavy and congested. The Sound Professionals pads really made a remarkable difference in that regard.   So far I used...
