Fiio E17 amp on AK120
You will love it! I have an AK120 going through the Fiio E17 and it is amazing. I am using Sennheiser HD650s and I love the control over eq that the E17 affords. I find the 5 band eq on the AK120 is enhanced by the bass and treble controls of the E17. Pretty good little amp for the price. I am...- TodaysTomSawyer

Monitoring with Sennheiser HD 545?
They're very similar in sound to the HD 580 set. Should be good for monitoring.- TodaysTomSawyer

I don't think it has a battery for on the go use. Otherwise, I'd consider it.- TodaysTomSawyer

Headphone recommendations to pair with the Astell & Kern AK120
I'm currently using my Sennheiser HD 545 Reference headset with the AK120 and it's doing splendidly. A rich, full spectrum catching experience when teamed up with an amp like my FiiO E17 Alpen. And there are way better amps out there that I'm sure would do better. The wonderful thing about the...- TodaysTomSawyer

The Pono Player Impressions Thread
It's NOT about making the DAP sound good. It's about compensating for a poor mixing job done by a studio producer/engineer trying to put his own stamp on the music, instead of allowing the instrumentation and/or the song speak for itself. I agree with someone's desire to want to use EQ. There...- TodaysTomSawyer

The Pono Player Impressions Thread
I agree with you. I don't always like the mixing job done on recordings. Especially the stuff coming out these days in the rock/folk world, which is what I listen to the most. EQ is a handy and very useful tool. It is less of an issue for me when I listen to '40s era jazz and obviously baroque...- TodaysTomSawyer

L8MDL, are you taking just the single line out side out of the Pono into the amp? Or do use the two - L and R balanced, which includes the HO and the LO - with two cables into the amp?- TodaysTomSawyer

MacBook pro sound card
Okay, this is interesting, I stumbled upon this thread at the right time. I have been introduced to the world of FLAC 24bit/96khz files via MPlayer X on my MacBook Pro. I have had a pair of Sennheiser HD 380s for the last 3 years and when I plug in to this set up it sounds fantastic. Plenty of...- TodaysTomSawyer

Headphones most similar to Sennheiser HD 545 Reference?
Sennheiser HD 380s come kind of close. You might find a used pair for under $100. A little less bass, perhaps a smaller soundstage but I love mine. I just bought a used pair of 545s today and the comparison is fresh for me.- TodaysTomSawyer

The Pono Player Impressions Thread
Can anyone tell me how a pair of Sennheiser 545s will work with a Pono Player? I bought them used, in great shape, specifically for the reason that Surf Cables makes a compatible headphone cable to use in balanced mode. Is the amp in the Pono Player enough to drive the 545s?- TodaysTomSawyer

Review by 'TodaysTomSawyer' on item 'Sennheiser HD-545'
Bought these used, in excellent shape, to use mainly for listening to FLAC files on my MacBook Pro using MPlayer X. Also ordering a Pono Player which I plan on running in balanced mode with these puppies. I noticed that Surf Cables makes balanced headphone lines for them, so I searched them out...- TodaysTomSawyer

Rockbox for iPOD Video 5th 5.5th mSATA SSD MOD
Does anyone know how I can set up my ipod video 60gig with Rockbox? I am using a MacBook Pro but nothing works. I just read that you have to initialize the ipod on a windows machine? Will I be able to load FLAC files from my Mac to it after that? I am confused and not good with this stuff. Would...- TodaysTomSawyer
