I am looking for the best possible soundstage headphones between $1000-$2000, not including amp/DAC. Will pay extra if necessary. My instinct says HD800S. I love my HD598s. Feel free to recommend amp/DAC setup as well. Thanks in advance for any advice!
Ive had the hd800s and it's got a big soundstage. Currently have the Hifiman Arya stealth and the Ananda stealth it's really impressive too. Go with the Arya if music is most important, Ananda stealth if gaming as the priority. A Topping L50/E50 is a great value, the A30pro/D30pro is good also. I have the SMSL HO200/DO200 MKII and it's fun with really good dynamics and soundstage.
I would personally say Hifiman Arya.
I have Arya V2 and it needs quite a bit of power alright, Im running it on a Lake People G111, which is the minimum it should run on.
As far as I know Arya Stealth takes less power to run.
I've not tried HD800S, but my experience of most other Senns are a tad bass light, although thumping bass and a huge sound stage would probably sound a bit wrong.
I don't know of any others really that would get to that level of sound stage..

Having recently acquired and listened extensively to an HD800S, I can say with total confidence that the HE1000se I had makes it sound intimate in comparison.
TH900 has beautiful stage for closed, but it's kinda more semi-closed. I just really enjoy the way it stages and images, even if it isn't the MOST massive.

The soundstage of the HE1000se is very large and well implemented, maybe not quite the huge space that the Arya presents, but still wider and deeper than the Ananda.

$1K - $2K for headphone with the best soundstage not including a DAC/amp is a used Raal SR1a headphone. The Raal SR1a headphone soundstage is hugely impressive and you could probably get one used for under $2K for just the headphone alone. If you prefer market price, you could go for a new Raal CA1A for exactly $2K and that headphone have a better bass if you care about that. It’s really hard to beat ear speakers when it comes to soundstage.

The ZMF Atrium with Caldera Ultra perforated pads or Auteur perforated leather pads has the 2nd best soundstage I’ve ever heard, just slightly behind the 800/800S. But the Atrium has fantastic bass quality and quantity, unlike the Sennheisers.
