Focal Elear and Utopia Review / Preview With Measurements - Head-Fi TV
Jul 25, 2016 at 10:51 AM Post #1,187 of 5,632
Is my understanding that the first batch from The SourceAV is sold out. Apparently they will be getting more from the manufacturer in 10 days to 2 weeks. That's when I am getting mine.
We have our display models all the time. We have additional units coming in this week (According to Focal France). We should have enough out of this next shipment to fulfill a lot of orders of all 3 models. We estimate to our clients 2 weeks but anticipate sooner.

The Verge just posted a very nice review of the Utopia and Elear on their website.

"The simplest way to define the Utopia difference is that every sound is given its own space and definition.  It's like there are a million little speaker drivers to account for all the various instruments in a composition so that you hear each and every one of them distinctly."

The above quote from the review pretty well sums up what makes the Utopia's sound so special.

Are they four-grand worth of special?  That's for you to decide.

Mmm......I read the review 3 times. One area of concern: the bass. For those who have auditioned the Utopia and, for purpose of clarity: assuming the bass quantity and quality of the TH 900 is a 10/10 and the HD 800 S is 8/10, where would you scale the Utopia's bass performance?? I just want a sense of where these headphones lie as far as bass is concerned relative to each other. Feel free to alter the assumption and cite other HPs as a point(s) of comparison. TIA.

Hello Gang!

You have 2 guys here on Head-Fi that have been great supporters of The Source AV. You have Steve "Audio Addict" in the Chicago area and Lee "Grizzlybeast" in the Portland Oregon area. Both gentlemen are soon to be proud owners of the Focal Elear.

The point of this announcement is to let you know that I am lending them both a set of Elear and Utopia for those of you that can arrange the time and are in their area to evaluate and enjoy these great headphones. Contact Audio Addict for more information about their 8/13/16 meet and contact Grizzlybeast if your near the Portland area for their meet this coming weekend 7/30/16. Enjoy and be sure to let us know your impression on these great Focal headphones.

That's not a very large margin but I would rate Utopia bass at 9 in this scenario. It's not as abundant as the TH900 and a bit more then the HD800s.

Note also that I felt the Elear had more bass but that may have been just due to its darker overall signature.

If the TH-900 is a 10/10 in bass quantity, then I would put the HD 800S at a 5/10 in quantity. And purely subjectively, I would put the Elear at a 7.5/10 and the Utopia at a 7/10 in bass quantity.

But my personal ideal for bass quantity is the TH-X00, which I would rate as a 8.5/10.

As an aside, I can't rate the HD800S that low in bass quantity myself because with a bit of EQ bass boosting, I've been able to get them to really thump. They scale really surprisingly well.

Darn was wondering if they would be able to overtake the th900 in terms of bass response.

Oh hell no!  The TH900 (and I assume the mk2) is probably the most bass-heavy 'audiophile' headphone currently available.

Yeah, I sorta doubt any open headphones are even capable of more bass authority than a closed one, it's just physics.
