From the product video from Tyll's interview HiFiMAN is modeling the sound of the Sundara after the 560 which is sad because it's sound is technically inferior to the 400i.

How about this? If HiFiMan is modelling the Sundara after the 560, then it should be technically superior to a version based on the 400i.

Tyll Hertsens doesn't like the he560 either but seems to have chalked it up to personal taste. I say this because instead of reviewing it himself (and giving it a bad review) he gave the job to somebody else, who ended up giving a positive review for Inner Fidelity. The technical superiority of the he560 is pretty clear to me when I put them on. More depth, more bass, more treble, more detail, more sound stage, more energy -- more of just about everything. But if you don't like the tuning, then obviously none of that matters.

I’m assuming these are open-back as well? I ask because the mesh on the back looks super tightly weaved.

Knowing how Hifiman designs headphones, expect nearly as much sound to leave as reaches your ears. They use practically know backing material, they’re always as open as possible
