Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Review & Measurements

Having both on hand, this is absolutely not an HD 660 S. It's also not an HD 580 or an HD 580 Jubilee. It's something else entirely.

See I find it close enough... 660S has a few minor advantages/differences but to me they are just not very significant.

But yes, I do think the choice of naming it after the HD580 might cause some confusion. Ditto the Jubilee terminology. I suspect Sennheiser just wouldn't let them call it an HD66XS...

Is this thing closer in sound signature to the HD600 or the HD660 S?

It's quite close to HD660S, and closer to HD600 than it is to HD650. If that makes any sense.

A smaller driver. Again, interesting. So that precludes it sounding just like the previous versions.
Hi Beagle, The HD58X Jubilee has a 38mm sized driver...same as the HD580/HD600/HD650/HD6XX. The HD660S has a driver 2mm larger at 40mm.

EDIT: HD660S also has a 38mm driver. Sennheiser has confirmed this. There are differences in drivers and damping.

660S: Sounds cleaner, faster, blacker. Less resolving than the 650, tunnel like sound stage, most forward on voices, turns to a mess the most on busy songs. best looks,
650: Most resolving, most laid back, most immersive, less controlled in the sub bass than either, most nuanced and most scalable.
58X: Sounds less resolving than the 650, brighter than the 660S in the lower treble, more controlled in the bass than the 650 stock, not as forward in the middle mids as the 660S but similar in nuance.

Sennheiser made 150 ohm versions of the HD 580/600 drivers in the past for the HD 545, 565, etc. It's obvious by looking it's not the HD 660 S drivers. Could be more related to the HD 545/565 drivers but may be something else altogether. Those drivers were swappable with the HD 600/650 drivers, I had the HD 545 at the same time as the HD 600 and HD 650, the drivers were brighter and airier but not quite as resolving as the HD 600/650's. These may be a modern iteration of the HD 545/565 which fit somewhere between the HD 598/599 and the HD 600/650. Seems Sennheiser is expanding the HD 6xx line again, there were a lot more HD 6xx based headphones in the past. I think in the 90s there were like 5-6 variations of the design. The HD 525, 535, 545, 565, 580, and the 600. Not sure if I'm missing any.

Uuugghh Massdrop why now? I don't have any money *sigh* Too many good headphones to buy, first world problems amiright?

Good on Massdrop and Sennheiser though! It'll be interesting to hear an actual variance on the Jubilee sound vs a re-release like the HD6XX. I'm sure these will get plenty of future drops anyway :p

Yet Jude indicated it was a driver Sennheiser had never used before. And I find it odd that there are two different drivers with only 2mm difference in size. Usually it's 5mm or 10mm increments.

Yep, I guess I was adding that clarification to my post at the same time you were responding. :)

can you please give us a review? some crazy bass EDM music, does it sound good or is the bass too light to have the fun impact for EDM music on the new massdrop rx5 jubillee? i want to buy it since its in my budget, but i really only love EDM music and strong bass hits, but i also like higher treble cans for when im gaming, so is the bass hitting "good enough" for EDM on these cans? or should i just get the HD6xx?

For twenty bucks more there's the Hifiman 4XX which is very competitive with the whole '600' line.

I own these and the 400i, and the 400s (well i used to own all 3 before I sold/refunded) and they are all super bass light... can't enjoy rap or EDM bass hitting music at all with the he 4xx lineup, so im not sure how you can say it compares to HD650 which has insane bass hits and slam

Similar question here, but for Rock music... For $150 I am very tempted, but worried bass would be too light for Rock.
Also, for people who auditioned the 58X already - any reason to get it if I already own the 600? Again, for context, I listen mostly to Rock music.

Seems like you are looking for a bass-head headphone and might be better with a Fostex or a closed headphone if you find the HD400i to be "super bass light" since to me my HE400i has bass that is deeper and more pleasing for EDM than my HD650, HD660S and sold HD600.

To be honest, despite sennheiser trying to make these more efficient the HD58X decently solid bass and the bass gets stronger from a high impedance output or OTL amp. It will all depend on that amp you use as to which results you get. My Mogwai Special Edition has a 300ohm tap and the 58X hits really hard from that output. even harder than from my Aficionado or my Mogwai's 32ohm output.
Confused. What exactly is this and why?
I think that Sennheiser has now made the most iterations of one kind of headphone to your point BUT I would take the 58X over the 660S irregardless of price. This makes the 660S a bit obsolete to me. The 58X does decent with busy music unlike the 660S which can struggle there at times. Some will disagree and no problem but in my mind the the versions worth buying are the 650/6XX and 58X
