Proof of evolution—Darwin Filters V2 for HiBy RS6, RS8, RS2, FC6
Nov 17, 2023 at 9:50 PM Post #61 of 106
Question about V2 filterset (and filters in general): When using RS6 to output Bluetooth to wireless speakers or TWS headphones, is the effect of the filter selected incorporated into the Bluetooth stream, i.e. - reach the receiving wireless device and impact it's sound?
...no.

edit: but if you ask "filters in general", that's a different matter. The effects of systemwide audio plugins do effect Bluetooth.

I have a new audio plugin in mind, one which produces a very warm, lush effect for me at the right settings. Its main effect actually is the removal of harsh treble peaks while maintaining low level treble detail. The only caveats are that its working principle bears no resemblance to tubes, and, there is a slider you have to adjust, which acts sort of like the overdrive pedal on tube amps. Too little and there is no effect, too much and it "saturates" the output, resulting in a fuzzy mushy sound. Ideally you only need to adjust this one slider, but you may find that you have to adjust it differently depending on how loud the music is relative to the device volume output (i.e. if two recordings sound the same volume at different device volume settings, you may have to adjust the slider differently). Alternatively, there may be an additional preamp slider, and you should be able to keep the "drive" slider at around the same place as long as you keep the device volume setting constant and use the preamp slider to adjust volume.

Gauging interest...
This is now available as a JamesDSP* plugin for anyone interested...

The bass, mids and treble dynamics are from DRX10K^ while the bias slider is the slider envisioned in the above quote. Full to the right is no effect while somewhere down to the left it starts doing its work and too far to the left everything is squished out XD

When will the RS2 evolve?

Just to confirm, the Darwin v2 filters will eventually be available through a firmware update and not a side load method?
Just raising this query again as it’s been a while…. @Joe Bloggs grateful for an eta for RS6 firmware update that includes v2 Darwin, thanks

I have the R6 2020 with the Convolution and DRX10K Dynamics installed. How and where is the new James DRX10K installed? Thanks! (www.dropbox....1oscg&dl=0)

That would be through RootlessJamesDSP on the play store, you would load it as a file for the Live programmable DSP section there, after... numerous OS gymnastics as directed by the app 😅

Unfortunately when I attempt to download RootlessJamesDSP from the Play Store using my R6 2020, it says "This app won't work for your device" with no install option. My original plugin DRX10K Dynamics still works OK. I am running the latest firmware update. Perhaps I should just wait for the next firmware update and hope the new DSP is included.

The new NOS filters don't work with the IEM tuning presets? Because when I switch my IEM preset to MEST MK II, the filter changes back to Darwin 10. Doesn't follow the new naming convention.

That, may well be why it's taking them forever to update the Darwin filters officially.

The IEM presets are a combination of choice of Darwin filter and choices of the various other settings in the Darwin controller page.

I did point out that given that the Darwin filters in V2 are of a different number and correspond to different functions, one might need to look into reprogramming the IEM presets for V2. According to the respective IEM manufacturers' experiences with the new filterset, preferably.

I'm guessing this never managed to happen. Still, it's a shame that a superior and expanded set of filters cannot be officially installed because of this.

Update: the fact that the R8 ii comes out with a new non-overlapping set of custom IEM tunings for its Darwin v2 filters seems to support this speculation.
