The Rikubuds Alter Rider 3 is a special neutral set, with top-notch technicalities and great timbre. It does most areas well and qualifies as a TOTL earbud.

Prospective customer here. Which of the Gen 1 tuning would be the most suitable for listening while commuting - mix of walking and public transit? To be more specific, the most optimal tuning that would let me hear the most of my music without raising my volume to unsafe levels? I ask based on this comment.

You want the bassiest tuning then, which in Gen 1 is Berserker 1.

Although tbh, I would NOT recommend ANY earbud if you want to use it outside if volume safety is a high priority, buds simply just does not have any isolation in comparison to iems, that is the reason why you lose a lot of the bass frequencies with buds.

Very well put. Riku beat me to the punch! Totally concur flatheads (earbuds) are not made for commuting and mobile applications in noisy environments.

I understand that, and actually re-experienced this firsthand with a Yincrow X6 fairly recently.

But I asked for two reasons. One is that the earbuds being open means I can still maintain situational awareness. Even when I wear AirPods Pro, I still get some interference from the outside world. Obviously less than open backs, but my point is that being outdoors will automatically compromise the sound anyway regardless of gear, especially since I am always aware of my volume level.

The second reason is aesthetics and nostalgia. I’m old enough to remember a time when IEMs were not mainstream. And I like the shade of red you have on your website for Gen 1 buds. I think it will look very good with a red iPod Shuffle. Silly, I know.

As long as you are aware of it that is fine.

You can pick the shell and cable color yourself among those shown in my website. Although stock is very low for most of the gen 1 and 2 colors as the focus is on gen 3 now.

Not finalized yet but currently more upper-mids, less treble and more bass than the Alter Rider 3. Its closer to my usual house tuning.
