Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

The Fyne F300 and GJallarhorn are liking each other. As the speakers are against the wall I put the port stoppers (?) in and still used Roon's MUSE to shelve down the bass, which was a bit wooly for my tastes.

Thumbs up from me! I suspect the F301 would be even better but that's too big for the space.

BTW, what's with the GJ speaker connection? Very annoying as the wire I wanted to use was spade on both ends, the big ones, too.
No room for binding posts,so we have banana jacks.

This only has standard tube combinations though.

This reminds me that I really need to go through my tubes and make note of how many milliamps they run at.

The former high-end residential designer/drafter in me is looking at a bathroom that is an acre in size and a water closet that is still just a literal closet. I like a little more elbow room for the throne, myself.
Concentrate the stink, for your enjoyment!

For the good? 🤔

I would say yes for the good. To be honest, as a preamp to Rekkr, the FV and Valhalla2 were pretty equal and pretty darn good.

I had the Freya N sitting as a parallel preamp to my HT (running the separate amps feeding my my R and L speakers) and used it precisely once. That's when it hit me to use it as the preamp to Rekkr. But I was shockingly underwhelmed. Seemed quiter, less dynamic, less engaging. But now it's back to the FV/Valhalla2 enjoyment level. Maybe even a little better. There's maybe more detail retrieval.

I'm on my third LP trying to figure it all out. It may take a couple more to make a full decision. The sacrifices we make for our hobbies. 😂

Just make banana to binding post adapters.
Yeah, making anything involving wires usually winds up with me in the emergency room.

No need to risk self harm.

I finally found someone who wanted a headphone amp/DAC I have had around for a while. IMG_7237.jpeg

Complete with magic eye tubes lol.

I used banana plug to binding post adapters for my speaker wire on Gjallarhorns. Just make sure the adapters (or the spades if you use them) do not touch each other.

Okay. After several albums I can say for certain the Freya N with the Mullard 7308/6N6P combo is spectacular.

And yes, without hesitation the Freya N is a significantly better preamp than the Valhalla 2.

My TT hasn't sounded this good in long while. I finally found the right synergy.

Ok, serious question. If I swap the cathode follower tubes on the Freya N (left side) to 6N6P will it increase the gain compared to the stock 6N1P tubes? Jason mentioned it in his chapter as an option, but I'm unclear the advantage of this situation.
No. Gain is dependent on the μ of the right-side tubes. My understanding is that, ideally, you would use a tube with high transconductance in the follower stage for better control of output impedance. 6N6P is a good choice.

I usually run 6N6Ps in the cathode follower stage and "roll" the gain stage. I've been running 50's GE 6BZ7's on the right with 6N6Ps as followers for weeks, and have really been enjoying that combination.

So what would the sonic difference potentially be? Since it is a preamp, I'm unsure how output impedance control matters as much. The only thing I came up with is I'm mimicking the tube configuration of the Valhalla2 and FV. Or I could be completely imagining everything.

Any opera fans on here who also have an opinion on what they think is the best Wagner Ring Cycle recording? Looking for full cycles, not individual operas.

I've got the old vinyl box sets of the Solti cycle and have worked my way through a bit of that but am always curious what other people like. Are there any modern cycles that are well regarded?

Currently browsing my way through a selection of gins produced at my distillery. 😎
