The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Hi guys, I am new in forum and also I started to care about the "quality" of listening just a couple of months ago. I have read a lot about headphones in general and DT880 and they are now my next buy (I am in italy and we don't have many shops to try headphones and listen to them). I currently have superlux hd681EVO, so i guess i will have a big increase in quality. I am still undecided between 250\600 ohm and which amplifier\dac I will need (I have low budget, was thinking about Audioquest Dragonfly).

Sorry for long post :)

The AQ Dragonfly puts out 2V maximum output so it will NOT power the 600's and have a hard time with the 250's.

I'll post this info again.
The 600 ohm version requires a fair bit of voltage to reach optimum performance, an amplifier needs to output around 6V to give you an acceptable level of overhead. USB Amps & Dacs cannot provide the needed voltage to power the higher ohm headphones properly. I really do not understand why everyone wants a 600 OHM headphone when they don't have any gear to drive them or they want to drive them from their phone/ipod. A 250 Ohm version would reduce the voltage requirements by half and a 32 ohm version even more.

All the new people looking to purchase beyer's always want the 600 ohm version as they think or have read they are better than the others. If you have the gear to drive the 600's then by all means get them otherwise the 250's or 32's are a better choice. The sound difference between the three versions is not a night and day thing so the lower ohm versions are usually a better buy.

I power my DT880 250 ohm with a FiiO E09K/E17 combo or from the Little Dot MK IV tube amplifier at the desktop. If I take them portable, I have a FiiO E12 that runs them perfectly off my DAP.

Guys, those of you that have dt880 and HD800. Which has better bass impact?

HD800's bass is tighter/faster and more layered, but a tiny bit lower in level relative to 1kHz (slightly cooler presentation)

Gotcha. Thinking of maybe upgrading to the hd800s. Have you heard that one?

I was hoping my He560 would be my upgrade, but there is just something weird about its imaging and the way it layers sound to me that I cannot get past.

I haven't tried HD800S yet, but it's pretty much the same as the HD800 with a few dB less at 6kHz and added second order distortion in the bass. Seems like a nice headphone.

If you want something that's sort of a DT880 but warmer/fuller and a bit more impactful in the bass you should consider a late Beyerdynamic T1 v1

Definitely audition the T1 before you buy.

Having had a t1 v1 for three years and having sold it for a dt880 I found it to be artificially bright especially with acoustic music.
I also felt the T1 often had a metallic element to it`s sound and a v shaped signature.

My 2 cents only of course. The T1 is a fascinating headphone though at times.

All the reviews and impressions I have read on the t1 sound like it is not what I am looking for, just like described by perhapss I really think the hd600s might be just what I am looking for. I have held off on the hd800 as I don't want less bass impact than the 880, but maybe the 800s is just the ticket?

I think unit to unit variation might play a role here, up to certain point...

My T1 has less energy in the 6kHz region than both DT880 and HD800 (less than HD800S too) and thus it's less steely bright and less prone to sibilance.

It's still sharp (8kHz) pretty much like DT880.

The hd 600 is in fact worth a try IMO based on stated criteria.

EDIT: Furthermore, when I got my dt880 I found it was the compromise I was looking for between the T1 and the hd600.

The reasons people want the 600 ohm is well documented by Tyll on YouTube. Watch it.

The video where he says in the comments below...

"I'd say hearing the differences between the two higher impedance cans more likely a placebo effect thing. The 32ohm can was pretty obviously worse sounding."

Is that the one you meant when you said Watch it?

Not a big fan of the hd600, I think it is rolled off on the top and bottom.

After reading stuff like this for some time on headfi I tried several other t1s in Tokyo recently.
It proved this theory to be nonsense. They are not that different.

That proves nothing, have you measured them?
Were those T1s from different batches?

This is an early T1 measured by Goldenears

This is a later pair:
