Introducing Shanling UA3 - Our first Portable USB DAC/AMP with brand new generation of AKM DAC!
Jan 2, 2023 at 7:57 PM Post #93 of 147
Hi

I am using Roon from MacBook Air to stream to the UA3. Is there anyway for me to adjust the UA3 settings with Mac or IOS. I have the Eddict app however that doesn't connect from iPhone?

Thanks,
No, adjusting the setting is possible only with Android phone.

I am looking for a good dongle and I think this one could be the best. Soundwise it should be an improvement over an Apple dongle. Is that correct? I only need the unbalanced output. These things are Good:

- AKM (which I have in My Smsl D6)
- Play / pause
- Software and Hardware Volume Control
- No battery (of course it Needs Power From the Smartphone but you have no wear parts)
- Good power

Disadvantage:
- no ios app

The Ibasso dc03 and 06 is an alternative. But i think the Shanling offeres more Features and has more power. So this one makes more Sense?

Just got one of these today (dark green color), and it sounds amazing both on my Pixel 7 and connected to my desktop PC. This was a great choice to pair with my first (but not last) pair of IEMs.

I love mine, and use it all the time.

Took delivery of this little beast 3 days ago and I'm loving it so far. One question though: for it to be bit-perfect, do you always have to set windows volume at 100 and control the volume via EddictPlayer or by pressing the physical volume buttons?

All other dongles I've tried would sync hardware volume with windows volume, but on the UA3 I don't see anyway to sync the two.

For bit-perfect, the player (software) needs to be able to use the DAC in exclusive mode and the player will control the hardware volume. Windows sound processing (including volume) isn't engaged if the direct (exclusive) connection to the hardware is done right by the player software.

The thing is this dongle has an internal volume control which is independent from system volume, or what you'd call hardware volume when you engage exclusive mode on UAPP. Usually when you engage ASIO or WASAPI on the computer or exclusive mode on your phone they take direct control of hardware volume on the dongle, not in this case. Download EddictPlayer on Android, set the internal volume to 0 and you'll see that even when you use exclusive mode and crank hardware volume to Max, it wouldn't make any sound. The default internal volume is set at 100 so your probably not even aware of its existence.

Right now the only way to control the internal volume is via EddictPlayer or by pressing the middle button for 2 seconds. Shanling can you tell us if the internal volume control is hardware based or a software one that's meant to be non-bypassable?

If that's true, then yes, I was not aware. I assumed that it worked like any other DAC device in exclusive mode (Windows, Android, iOS, or otherwise) where the player interacted with the digital volume control on the DAC. Hopefully @Shanling will chime in and make it clear as to how their volume control works in exclusive mode.

The UA3 is designed with two split volume controls, mainly for use with mobile phones. There is now way for the computer to control the hardware volume, that's done only directly on the UA3.

So you mean the internal volume control is the a hardware-based volume control? Does that mean to be bit-perfect I have to always set windows volume at 100% and control the dongle's volume by pressing the middle button?
