My DIY electrostatic headphones

Hey all, it's been a minute since I posted an update. I was making some new diaphragms as I had some issues with my last set, so I figured I would post some pics of my setup. Some lessons learned. The antistatic gel cleanser I was mixing with car spray was no good. First set of diaphragms was a mix of car detail spray and gel cleanser. They continued to work but eventually had melted spots all over the diaphragm where it had arced. The gel cleanser would dry and not leave any resistance behind. Figured this out by making a pair of diaphragms with only the gel cleanser.. they worked for 5 minutes and then I couldn't get any sound out of them at all. Recoating with the car detail spray fixed the issue.

Anyways here's my tensioning setup after removing the new diaphagms.

Added dust covers and got some better fitting pads. I swear they start to squeal within 5 minutes without the covers. I noticed I couldn't crumple up my dust cover as well as some others I've seen. I swear I crumpled it up in a ball at least 5x before applying. Doesn't seem to affect sound any to my ears so I'm not going to fuss over it. Same material as the diaphragms.

Finally, added some grilles and painted them to match my mousepad. Not the best job.. but I like it and it was fun.

If I was to add the reinforcements, would I need them to be on both sides or just one? Could I also 3d print them out of a hard plastic?

I know this is a late reply. While you do need reinforcement, it is actually a pretty small problem to solve. The big problem is actually finding the mesh or going through the process to electroplate it yourself.

Working on a pair of wire mesh stators soon, I found plenty of extremely fine stainless steel mesh on amazon. I think the stuff I bought is 150micron thick. It's conductive... why would electroplate be needed?

Hello. Can I ask for the name of your earpads? Can you provide its dimensions?

They were sheepskin replacement pads for koss esp950/a250 on aliexpress. My pair were specifically from 'jingzhi earmuffs official store.' 130mm tall x 95mm wide.
Thank you. I'm looking for a size 120mm x 90mm. I noticed that there are not many headphones that use this size other than the Audeze CRBN. But they don't sell replacement pads.

Does anyone have a set component values for an equivalent electroacoustic circuit of Stax headphones, preferably 009, but anything would be great. To see what I am talking about look at the document "ELEC-E5650 Electroacoustics, Headphones" at https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...usg=AOvVaw3DFsvKcp3Yu11-XdHFkr4C&opi=89978449. Particularly pp 11, 14, & 37. P37ff is for a dynamic headphone. I want the values for an electrostatic headphone.

Thanks for the encouragement. Based on the drawings you shared, I redrew the stator of HE-90, basically the same size, but the diameter of perforation is down to 1mm.

It will be a fun journey to accomplish the DIY. Pity that I don't have too much spare time.

Interesting link! especially the J.P. Wilson panel part.
It is the first time I’ve seen that electrical/mechanical equivalent circuit.
Also interesting, the spacer thicknesses he used 0.04” (1mm) and 0.025” (0.635mm) and assosiated comments.

I would like a reference that has an equivalent circuit of electrostatic headphones (preferably, or of loudspeakers as a second choice) that discusses the negative compliance modeled as negative capacitors and how to pick the values of those negative capacitances based on the physical design of the headphones.
