Yeah, I was wondering about that too. In fact, he promissed to do his first ever review. Maybe the task was too daunting?

They've generated a little interest, so they usually sell between $100 and $150 now. Don't be afraid of used ones, either. Beyerdynamic has had them in production since 1950 or 1951 - you can order any part you need.

Your tastes are close to mine - I really think you'd appreciate the DT48. Are you coming to CanJam? I'll have my two pairs along - a 25 Ohm and 200 Ohm. You'd be welcome to take a pair to your rig or maybe borrow overnight so you could evaluate them off the floor.

Rob, where in the bay are you located? I could bring over a pair for you to audition.

I appreciate both offers! I live in San Ramon. I am planning on going to canjam. It will be a busy couple of weeks coming up, but may get in touch with you to see if we can set up a time to audition.

I was blown away about these coming out in 1950. Just shows that the "new" stuff really doesn't do anything that hasn't already been done well

I'm given to understand he didn't like them and then broke the headband trying to ease the great discomfort exaccerbated by the clamp.

Just bought my 4th 48..This time I got a break at 125.00. This is a dual entry, coiled cable version. 25ohm. The pads seem much comfier then the other versions. Will test them out when I get them. My DT48 buying days are nearing a end, minus the 48s...And if I can get a great price on the 200 ohm version and another 48a.

I was eying those. I think what led them to such low price and attention was the lack for the full "Beyerdynamic" name in the listing. They came with 2 sets of brand new extra pads right?

One quick possibly dumb question. Can you pad roll (use DT48e pads) for the DT48as?

Yes & Yes.. I would like to make the 48s seller a offer.. I asked him about audio drop outs, and any crackling/or channels going out when the cable is twisted.. No response yet.. So..hmmmmmmmmmmmm..

If we do get together, I will bring my a and e model. To me theres a difference, with the a version being technically superior. They are also autometric headphones. I would like to compare them to your K1000 and GS1000. I heard the K1000 before, and feel the 48a is on that level in certain areas.. The K1000 and the 48a are the only headphones that made me say, these are truly special.

I noticed the a model manual is 3 pages longer then the e model, and contains frequency response data on the 48a. The e models manual has omitted a few of the design features that are in the a versions manual.

1. The matched transducer elements have a ohm of 5 per system and are carefully selected to achieve a maximum frequency response deviation of 1DB.

2. The straight cable, fixed to the headphone, is supplied bare ended so that specialist connectors can be used.

3. Easy lateral identification by means of colored coded covers correspond to accepted standards.

4. The coupling to the ear is supra-aural by utilising flat rubber ear cups.

WHY IS THE 8OHM VERSION NO LONGER BEING MADE!

Tonally, they're dead neutral, just like the planars, as well as very good headphones like the K-1000, HP-2, K-240DF, and HD-600. Things just sound accurate from the DT48, while pulling more detail than the others. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I consider the Joe Grado HP1/2 as the most transparent phones I ever heard. At a Head-fi meet while switching amps with a multi amp switcher, no other phone came close to making it as obvious which amp was playing. The ability to detect changes in downstream components was like nothing I ever heard before.

May I ask: how does the DT48 fare with transparency?[/size]

That's very nice to know. I always wanted an alternative to the super expensive and hard to get HP1/2. The fact that the HP1/2 are no longer made is a real deal breaker too.

I wonder what a DT48 with an enhanced cable would sound like?

Better. To put it blunty, they suck... Every 48 owner who had theres recabled noticed a nice improvement. I know the Cardas recable on my 8ohm 48, soothes out the harshness of the 48a..Not to say they are harsh per say, but adds a smoother presentation, with a hint of warmth, weighr and body..And the 120 ohm adapter gives the bass more slam..But a little bit of detail and clarity is taking away compared to the 48a..It's one reason I'm afraid to recable my 48a..I don't want the cable to change the characteristics or sound in any way. My 48e 8ohm is also balanced with a 4 pin connector.

Question for KBI ,

Now you've had the 48a and 48e for a while,

Can you please list in detail the differences .. in bass, midrange, treble , detail
etc..

I've pretty much read all of your writings on these, and you have mentioned before that the 48e 25ohm is the more evolved and musical , but the 48a is the more technically proficient . Do you still believe this to be true...

Thanks.
