@MariusAB

tl;dr - Most fun and musical sounding FiiO desktop device so far. Can't stop listening for three hours now.
Really i waited your impression , so it is musical. I like this a lot. Is technicalities included ? :) You heard all k9 and many other fiio and i see you liked it if you listened it so long, will wait your further impressions but from this short notes i believe it is worth the price and is good sounding device.

Yes, technicalities are very good, this is still a THX amplifier. The main difference between this and the others is that it has the least "digital" sound.

My "home music studio" slowly became my "media/Home theater".
I decided to sell my Arturia Studio as I had no more use for all these IOs.
I wanted to switch to a dedicated DAC, that would look more sleek in a saloon.
Few days ago, I thought DACs with balanced outputs weren't of this world, outside RME.
While knowing the ADI-2 for years, friend of mine owning one, I wanted a more affordable and "newer" product, with bluetooth and updated DACs.

I was on the verge of getting an used K9 Pro AKM version.
I then realised that the K9 non-pro AKM had just been released with updated AKM chips...
Honestly ? I don't see how to justify the price of the pro-AKM or pro-ESS anymore.

I wasn't aware of what was that SMSL brand at the beggining of the day.
They offer the same AKM combo on products that cost as much or more.
On the other hand, I'm well aware of the Fiio brand and it's long term reputation.

End of the day, I purchased that K9 AKM to a Bulgarian reseller for the same price as the regular K9.
Can't wait to put my hand on it :).
No much doubts on the fact that it will be a banger for the price.
Glad to be an early buyer.

Review and Disassembly of the K9 AKM (a different core): Desktop DAC and Headphone Amplifier
The AK4191+AK4499EX chip set was first applied in FIIO's product lineup with the portable DAC and headphone amplifier Q15. The Q15 is a remarkable product, excelling in performance and durability.
image048.jpg

Since the AK4191+AK4499EX chip set has already been successfully implemented in portable devices, it's a natural progression to move towards desktop-level products with a larger body and more abundant power supply. The previous model of the K9 used the ES9068 chip. Due to its modular design, it was quick to transplant the new decoding module without major adjustments to the motherboard, leading to the introduction of the AKM chip shortly after.

image054.jpg

"Figure: The AK4191+AK4499EX chip set has been applied in the Q15 portable DAC/Amp."
The AK4191+AK4499EX belongs to the VELVET SOUND product series, which is AKM's digital/analog dual-chip separation decoding solution. The DAC is a crucial component in the digital audio chain, and splitting the conventional single decoding chip into functional units encapsulated in two chips, allows for a higher upper limit and more possibilities in this process.
In fact, this also pays homage to the classic Philips solution, returning to the roots in terms of paradigm. The historical content about this aspect was discussed in the previous Q15 review.
Here, AudioTOP also predicts that AKM may continue to focus on the chip set, going further and producing more digital and analog modular units to facilitate the creation of rich chip sets.

image058.jpg

In addition to changing the core of the internal decoding circuit, there have also been some minor adjustments to the I/O ports on the body. The original K9 had a USB Type-B input port on the rear panel, while the K9 AKM version added a USB Type-C port on the right side of the body.
image060.jpg

Both the type and position of the new port are evidently more user-friendly for mobile audio sources like smartphones. In actual use, the insertion and removal feel smooth and effortless. Previously, to connect a smartphone to the Type-B port, you had to prepare a corresponding OTG cable, and it is difficult to find one with high specifications.
image062.jpg
image064.jpg

The convenience of the position goes without saying. Every time you access the ports on the back of the body, it's like groping in the dark. Now, with them placed on the right side, access is effortless. Even for left-handed users, it's easy to use the K9 AKM by simply standing it up.
image066.jpg

Although it's a core change, it's still a small action, so the difference in sound between the ESS and AKM versions of the K9 is not very significant. The headphone amplifier section of both versions is the same, thus to some extent, this mitigates the differences brought about by the decoding circuit.
Through repeated ABBA comparisons of the same tracks, it can be heard that the AKM version has slightly lifted vocals and instruments, making them more transparent. In comparison, the ESS version has a slightly stronger sense of bass.
In terms of timbre, the ESS version is straightforward, while the AKM version is slightly embellished, thus providing a slightly better listening experience with a velvety texture.

AP testing results came with the signal acquisition channel being the headphone jack. The test data for both the old and new versions of the models are decent and difficult to distinguish. In terms of headphone output power, since the headphone amplifier module has the same specification as the old version, the overall indicators are more or less the same.
In terms of noise, crosstalk, distortion, and other aspects, the new version has slightly improved due to the new decoding chip's superiority. Other minor discrepancies can be attributed to measurement errors.

EMI interference prevention components.
image097.png

Since AudioTOP previously disassembled the old version of the K9, disassembling the AKM version feels like disassembling the same machine again.
The shell, front and back panels, and internal frame structure of the two versions are basically the same, as well as the same custom linear transformer, voltage regulator power supply, and headphone amplifier module. Electrolytic capacitors are distributed on both sides of the mainboard for both new and old models.
image099.png

Unlike similar categories from competitors, what's special about the K9 internally is the presence of a transparent acrylic frame, which serves to combine the front and back panels with the circuit boards, increasing rigidity and shock resistance. The presence of the frame hindered photography, and we wanted to remove it to take some clear pictures of the chips. However, after studying its structure carefully, we felt that it would be a huge engineering task, so we ultimately gave up.
image101.png

The K9 AKM is robust and solidly built, with a neat appearance. With the sound quality and manufacturing process being carefully refined by FIIO, the K9 AKM is basically mature with a high degree of completion.
image103.png

The K9 leaves a strong impression with its analog elements, such as the internal toroidal transformer, the corresponding red voltage selector switch at the bottom of the body, the volume control knob with the feel of an analog potentiometer, and the small toggle switch on the panel.
The only complaint we have about it in use is that the five input sources are switched by only one INPUT button, which can be inconvenient if accidentally pressed too many times. Our suggestion for improvement would be to add a switching logic like single-press to move forward and double-press to return.
That's all for the review. AudioTOP will have more new reviews and disassembly articles soon. Stay tuned!

Where could a K9 AKM be purchased other than Aliexpress
Dear friend,

Hi, if you are located in USA, you could wait some time. We have arranged the shipment to our distributor in USA and you may be able to get K9 AKM from local stores or Amazon soon.
